Pibbs 514 Kwik Dri Dryer Big Sale! Reviews
Hesitating to buy this dryer because of the price is a short-sighted move. If your hair regimen includes regular salon visits for professional-quality wash and sets, this dryer will pay for itself in 10 home washings. Over 2+ months you would have spent the same money.
For African-American women especially who have relaxed shoulder-length hair, wash and sets create much less damage than blow-drying followed by curling irons (direct heat and stress, followed by more direct heat and stress). The drawback, though, is the time spent under the dryer. Longer, porous hair (like mine) can take a minimum of 90 minutes drying time with other standard chair dryers, even at the salon. Add to that the 1 or so hour spent prior on the shampoo, conditioning, and actual hair setting process, and you're talking about a 3 hour total investment, which does not include any wait time before you're actually seated for your hair service. So, I cannot understate what a huge deal it is that the Pibbs Kwik Dri cuts that drying time in half, from 90 minutes to 45 minutes. What this means:
1. I can now exercise the option to wash and set my hair on weekday mornings before work, if I have to, just by waking up an hour or so earlier than I would normally. This was an impossibility before, unless I wanted to set my alarm for 3:30am.
2. I can now schedule dates and other social events on the same days I sweat my hair out at the gym, without having to worry about not having enough time in between to re-do my hair.
3. Psychological barriers to washing and setting my hair at home have been removed. The prospect of sitting under the dryer for 90 minutes after struggling with the setting process, contributed to the overall dread in facing this task. This was made all the worse by the knowledge that your end result using cheaper dryers which would not dry the hair evenly, or get as hot would fall way short of the salon outcome. As a result, I avoided the whole process, which meant my skill level in setting my own hair never improved, which just created a vicious cycle that would drive me back to the salon for the professional setting results I wanted and needed. But now, because my hair only takes 45 minutes to dry with the Pibbs Kwik Dri, and I am assured of a positive, professional outcome for the time spent, I am more motivated to set my own hair at home, which means I do it more often, which means my setting skill level improves, which means with every week that passes I'm able to consistently achieve the same or better results at home (with the products of my choice), which keeps me out of the salon, and money in my pocket.
Bottom line: no other dryer on the market, or even in salons, comes close, and I've gone through my fair share for home use, the most recent being the Virgo CD320 salon dryer. What makes the Pibbs Kwik Dri 514 so effective is (a) the super hot settings, and (b) the unique hood design that extends all the way down the back, and around all sides, trapping in the heat and keeping it from escaping out the bottom, so that it circulates evenly from top roller to back roller. Note that to use this comfortably, as others have mentioned, you definitely need to get foam ear protectors, and wear some kind of light towel around your neck, to protect it from the heat. You can always adjust the heat downward, but that sort of defeats the purpose of the quick drying results. Just suck it up, keep it on the next to highest heat setting (60), and protect your ears/skin, and you'll be fine. Another benefit is that it's so easy to move from room to room, and the hood height can be adjusted on the stand to fit most any chair setup. I use it with my existing living room armchair, and the castor wheels on the base roll comfortably under so that I can sit back in luxurious comfort with my feet on the ottoman, and still have the dryer hood extend, or overhang, comfortably over the back of the chair.
Don't even get me started on the $120 or so dollars I'm saving every month by doing my own hair, or the fact that I'm no longer a slave to my stylist's schedule and availability. She now sees me only for rare cuts, color treatments or (relaxer) touch-ups. Overall, I am 100% satisfied with the quality and performance of this dryer, and have recommended it to everyone I know. You will forget all about the initial investment once you start reaping the immediate benefits mentioned above, and realize that you can't put a price on your valuable time. I can always earn back the $300 I spent on this, but I'll never be able to get back the time I lost or wasted previously (not to mention lost "quality of life" opportunities where I could have been engaged in other enjoyable activities), associated with this process.
This dryer is not suited for that purpose. Although I have not used it to rollerset my hair, I can tell it would be excellent for that purpose. The reason why is because the air circulates as opposed to blowing straight down on my head. That is why people have left rave reviews of quicker drying times.
However, the circulation creates a suction that pulls at any plastic conditioning cap I've used (hence the double-edged sword). I have to hold down my plastic cap in order to keep it from being pulled off my head. Also, the circulation pushes air beneath the plastic conditioning cap. This results in portions of my hair being dried as opposed to having a steaming (conditioning) effect as a result of the heat and wet hair.
The only viable solution I've come up with is to wear a thin headband (sort of like the Goody Ouchless ones) over my plastic cap. However, that can be really uncomfortable because the headband has to be of a certain "tightness" in order to hold the plastic cap on my head. It has me worried about damage to my hair. It's also really difficult to move my hair away from the edge of the plastic cap while trying to fit the headband on the edge of the cap.
I'm kind of frustrated right now. I bought this in September after waiting three years to purchase it. Yes, I did wait three years to buy this thing. It's very expensive, and I didn't want to waste my money. However, I don't think I made a wise decision.
Now, don't think that I am putting this dryer down because I do think it's an excellent dryer. It's just not suited for deep conditioning. This is a dryer that is made for rollersetting. If you are thinking of using it for that purpose, do not hesitate to purchase it.
To summarize....
Some positives:
Extremely easy to assemble (took less than five minutes)
Temperature regulation going all the way up to 70 degrees F.
Timer up to 1 hour
Ample amount of space for rollers
Height extends up to six feet
Easy to move around the house
Some negatives:
Takes a long time to heat up-almost 20 mins.
The timer is really loud-it's like you have the 60 minutes theme stuck in your ear
Can barely hear anything outside of the air and timer when sitting under the dryer
Requires a lot of storage space

...and by "double-edged sword" I mean the very thing that makes it worth purchasing is the very reason why I don't like it. Let me explain why I bought it. I am an inch and a half shy of being 6 feet tall. I have a long torso, and it has been very difficult for me to find a dryer that I can sit under and not have to squirm. I was also tired of using conditioning caps that required me to smush my afro textured hair down in order to use them [the conditioning caps]. The Pibbs 514 was the only dryer that I found that seemed like a trustworthy product, and also extended to an acceptable height (btw, I almost have to fully extend it in order to sit comfortably under it-it's excellent for that purpose). Now, I am not the type of woman who rollersets her hair. I am a deep conditioner, and I like to do it once a week.This dryer is not suited for that purpose. I just got the Pibbs dryer about 5 weeks ago. I had a cheaper dryer that took me 1 and 1/2 hours to dry my hair and even then it still wouldn't be completely dry. My hubby got this dryer for me for Christmas 2010 and I absolutely Love it! It does great roller sets nice and shiny. I also sit under the dryer with conditioner. The trick to this dryer is using a hair net. My dryer came with one so when I use a plastic cap to deep condition I put the small hair net on so the plastic cap does not come off...Also When I rollerset I use a large triangle hair net and ear protectors because this baby gets hot. It is a great investment plus I am a little over 2 years post relaxer so it helps me a great deal so I do not have to use a bunch of direct heat. If you are looking for a sturdy easy to use anywhere and sit anywhere dryer that cuts drying time in more than half... This is the dryer for you. I am actaully writing this review sitting under the dryer. Also when deep conditioning you do not need the dryer on super hot heat go medium heat you only want to steam the hair not dry it. This is the same dryer used at my Domincan Hair salon. It has temperature and a timer control. It dries my hair evenly and does not fry my hair and leave in brittle. You need to purchase a hair net to use it, and I would recommend ear coverings. Now I dont have to leave my house to get a fabulous wash and set. Its expensive but it really works well.

I only have one complaint about this curling iron. Why doesn't it come in MORE SIZES?! This curling iron is fantastic! I have long hair and would love to get one at 1 1/2. Belson, start making multi sizes. BTW...the matching blow dryer is good too.

This dryer works well. I use all of its options and it never gives me any trouble. I choose it because it was lighter and I love that about it. Compare the weight with others before you buy though. I don't know if it is perfect, because I payed a lot, but it was better than I expected. It is really weightless! I compared the air temperature with my old hair dryer and this is much more hot, which means that the hairstyle will last longer. It looks like it is professional! Dryer works well but I dont like the fact that there is only one temperature, hot. Need to use the cool shot button frequently. Very light weight. does dry hair quickly.
Cheap Hair Therapy Wrap
This really helped deep conditioner absorb in my hair but if you leave it in the microwave just a few seconds too long it's ruined. You have to heat it at 15 second intervals with a maximum of 90 seconds. I know, sounds easy but I've gone through 3 so far and am going to try the battery operated one instead. I'm hoping that the battery powered one heats more evenly as well.

This head wrap works pretty good --while it's hot. It cools pretty quickly -I'd say in about 20 minutes (I have A/C in my home set at about 69, so this could be an issue, too). You can't microwave it too long, because the plastic, liquid filled pouches in the cap will explode, so I pop it back in microwave every 25 minutes or so for about 1 1/2 minutes. It is very easy to use and looks exactly as pictured. I like that I can move around and am not tied to an electric cord. I bought this cap from another site and although it works well, it cannot get as warm as you'd need it to be for deep conditioning nor does it stay warm for a long time. I used this product ACCORDING TO THE DIRECTIONS and the packs burst and the gel hardened. I called the place I got it from and they do not sell refill packs. I have yet to find any place that does. Love this hair wrap. I used it in the microwave the first time but I later discovered that putting it in boiling water makes the heat last longer. No more sitting under a stationary bonnet for hot hair treatments!! Love it!

This is an extra hair blower I purchased. I was at a beauty trade show and purchased one of these blowers and loved it so much, I purchased two more (just in case...) Most important is how light weight it is. My hand always got tired half-way through blowing out my hair, and this one is extremely light and does a good job of drying my hair. The cord is bout 5' and it's relatively quiet. I'm happy:)

This item is listed as a professional dryer.... It is not! The cord on a pro dryer must 9 feet min this one is maybe 5 feet. The heat index and wattage are not enough to dry anything other than baby fine hair. And the seller would not return item one day after I received it. I don't recommend this product or seller!

I get compliments often when I use this product and other Davines products. A little goes a long way, so I think it's worth the price.

I bought this hair dryer about 1 year ago, and I absolutely love it. I have very fine hair which tends to look like dry straw if I use a dryer without the ionic feature. I also have a problem, especially in the winter when the air is dry, of flyaway electric hair. Ever since I started using this conair dryer, my hair has stopped being electric, it takes less than 5 minutes to dry my hair, and the result is shiny, bouncy healthy looking hair. I also like the fact that the heat and the air flow are independently adjustable, so I can have it on full blast with medium heat for my hair, and then reduce the heat, but keep the airflow full when I do my kids hair. The handle folds, so it doesn't take up too much space, and it only weighs 20oz. It has ions, ceramic technology, turbo, 16 heat and flow settings for a full sized dryer, I couldn't wish for anything more...

This is an OUTSTANDING hair dryer. What's not to like?My wife, who uses two different hair dryers to get the results she wants, is very picky. And one of hers broke, and she gave me a long list of what a replacement had to do. It had to have HOT hot, but adjustable down to cool. Cold shot would be good. It had to BLOW, not just a little. But it had to have gentle setting too. And when all was done, it had to leave her hair soft and silky, but not limp or frizzed. And it has to not be heavy or cumbersome, but it has to last. What is a husband to do? Why is it my job to find the perfect hair dryer? But I did. This one.
This hair dryer does it all. It is quiet but has powerful airflow, but adjusts down to soft zephyr. It has adjustable heat settings from really hot to warm to cool -and cold shot button for good measure. This Ion Shine thing seems to be more than a gimmick, she really likes how it leaves her hair. I tried it too, works for me also. And the handle folds against the body for compact storage. And the back pops open to clean the air filter grid. It is not too heavy, and not fragile either. Solid construction, good looks, should last a long time. Like I said, what's not to like.
Well, the end of the story is that this is now her ONLY hairdryer, and I'm a hero. :)
What's not to like? Why buy anything else? This has it all. It's a winner.

This item is apparently no longer be available on Amazon, however I will give my opinion just in case. Compared to my previous hair dryer--which lasted 18 years (!), this one is very quiet. The controls are straight forward, and the dryer works very well. The plastic out of which it is made appears fragile, but that is just an impression. The fold-down handle is a nice feature for travel or storage in a small drawer. Bought this recently for a relative and used it a few times myself.It is the best hairdryer I've ever used. That may not be saying too much because admittedly I'm not big into hairstyling, but I've had to buy several new hair dryers (different brands) in the past year for various reasons, and this one was far and away much better than those.
After using it, my hair had no frizz, curled in the direction I wanted it to (by drying it with a round brush) -which never happens with other hairdryers, and it stayed the way I wanted it to all day without the use of styling products.
I don't know if that's down to the ionic part, the ceramic part, or what. I've tried dryers with the ionic feature alone, with the ceramic feature alone, and with both features together before, but they haven't had the results that this one does.
The range of heat settings and airflow settings is great. My hair doesn't do well with dryers that only have high & low, hot & cold. I need medium heat, medium air. This dryer's medium settings are just right. The cold shot is good too.
On the negative side, it's a bit heavy and it's a bit long in the nozzle for me, so that my arm finds it difficult to reach over and dry my hair on the other side of my head without hitting my scalp with it. But most dryers above the purely budget category are this heavy and this big, if not moreso.
I just wish that this brand were sold in the country I currently live in, but it is not (and it's not dual-voltage).
Don't let it put you off that this model is several years old now and isn't in the "hairdryer" bestselling list on Amazon.

This hair dryer isn't top of the line but it is good for what you're paying. My hair dries much more quickly and with less frizz than my old hair dryer, which is great because frizz is a definite problem with me. My hair looks more shiny and beautiful when I use this compared to letting it airdry. It folds up, which is nice, and its lint guard just flips back and is easy to clean. The concentrator attachment it comes with works well for straightening my stubbornly wavy hair.Just don't forget the turbo setting on the side of the dryer! I almost didn't know it existed until I checked the directions for advice on using the attachment.
