After returning my second blow dryer to Target, I went on a short quest to find a quiet (or at least relatively so) blow dryer. Thanks to the amazon reviews here, I found it. The Centrix Q is MUCH quieter and the sound of the dryer doesn't have that high pitched frequency of the cheaper ones. It has a lower pitch in tone, in its sound, which I really prefer. On the slow speed, it is very quiet. On the higher speed, it is relatively noisier, but not bad at all. It also dries very quickly on the higher speed so I can dry my short hair in about 4 minutes. Finally, the weight of the dryer is light. I also like how they distributed the weight; it makes it very easy to handle. LOVE this dryer! It was worth every penny! Note to others if you search for this dryer on youtube you can hear its sound in some of the reviews. I found that very helpful as well.

I don't understand how anyone could write a review about this thing and say it's not the quietest high-quality hairdryer available! I research my purchases extensively--both online (reviews) and locally--and this was no exception. Went to local stores to do the hands-on testing after regretably purchasing a FHI Nano 2000 based on reviews and subsequently returned (loud, too hot, not impressed at all). Tried MANY and narrowed it down to the Chi, Rusk, and the Centrix (which like the FHI was unavailable for me to try locally). The Chi was quiet but had only one heat setting which was too hot for my twin 5 yr-old daughters! The Rusk Speed Freak was impressive--tied for most quiet of the ones on display and seemed well built, but the other one it tied with was the SAME one we are replacing--the Revlon T Studio (less than half the price). Was really hoping for QUIETER and BETTER. Also, while the Rusk has 3 heat settings, the low was too low and the medium was a bit too scorching for my skin. Took a chance on the Centrix and am VERY impressed! The packaging screamed top-of-line product, the hair-dryer feels extremely well made, and the best part......ran in to the bathroom and plugged it in next to the T studio for a side by side comparison. The result: OMG....not even CLOSE!! SOOO much quieter! My daughters and I can have a conversation or listen to music while we dry, and I don't have to worry about the long term toll this ritual is having on my family's hearing! My wife's hair absolutely looks healthier and she does not find it heavy or cumbersome in the slightest (5'4", 95lbs!). The middle heat setting is PERFECT and it dries quickly too! You will NOT regret this one. Hope this helps some folks!

First off... don't expect silence, as it still is a hair dryer with a motor and fan. But this is certainly quieter than any hair dryer I have ever used. Those expecting 'whisper quiet' or silence should wait for Dyson to come up with a $500-$600 magic hair dryer. With this, you can carry on a normal conversation, without raised voices while using it.

It was immediately apparent on my initial examination... the key to the quiet design is that it includes a 'Squirrel Cage' type fan (see the images I published above). This type of fan, due to its larger diameter, requires lower revolutions-per-minute to produce the same air flow as a straight through in-line fan. With the slower turning, this makes for an inherently quieter motor requirement. The audible frequencies of this unit are, therefore, in a lower 'hushed' range. This is also how central heat/air conditioning units produce air flow, also very quietly.

Some have mildly complained/commented that this is a 'big' hair dryer. It is true that this is no compact unit, nor was it intended to be. it is a salon size hair dryer. It is a bit bigger (wider) than most, but it is a fair trade-off for the quietness. It is not obtrusively large compared to other full sized dryers and, in my opinion, is not at all heavy for it's size. It, however, needs to be wider than others in order to include this fan which, as I noted before, is larger in diameter and is oriented perpendicular to normal dryers.

Another contributer to air noise in general is air turbulence. This dryer has more air intake area, which should contribute to less turbulent flow of air being drawn in. Any restrictions in air flow cause turbulence, and will result in noise. The perfect example being the 'speed-booster' included with the unit, which helps to produce 50 mph air-speed according to the literature. All it is is a restrictor oriface that goes on the front air outlet. The forcing of more air through the smaller exit does make the air travel faster, but at the expense of more noise due to turbulence. It kind of defeats the purpose if this dryer for me, but it works in case you need more air speed. I don't expect frequent use of this.

The rocker switches feel of higher quality than on typical department store brands, but this, as well as the overall quality and design, should be expected of a dryer in this upper price range. As far as any negative reviews noting longevity problems, I can't speak to that as I only opened the box today. Time will tell, and if problem arise, can always come back for an update to this review. I expect longevity to maintain the 5 stars I have given it.

I believe it hits the design point spot-on for the intended product market. I am pleased so far with the initial product quality and design.

Honest reviews on Centrix Q Zone Quiet 1500 Watt Tourmaline Ceramic Ionic Hair Dryer

I am somewhat disappointed in the amount of noise the hair dryer makes. While it is slightly less noisy than a regular dryer, it is not as quiet as I (or my husband) had hoped. It does lack that high pitch squeal often associated with dryers and emits a deep, less irritating humming sound! (I hope the description is helpful for those seeking peace and quiet)It does definitely dry hair faster.

Hopeful for a quiet, solid hairdryer, I ordered this direct from Amazon and received it quickly. I tested it out, and on full speed it was nice and quiet. I switched it to low, and there was a distinct buzzing/rattling sound, the kind that grates on my nerves. When I shook it the buzzing briefly stopped, but started again as soon as I held it steady.

Thinking I received a defective unit, I returned it, and quickly received the replacement with no hassle from Amazon. Unfortunately, the second unit had the same issue. It seems to be a design defect. I returned the second hairdryer for a refund.

On low our $20 hairdryer is quieter than this unit, and less annoying. One star.

This brush is very scratchy (the ends of the bristles are jagged). It's bristles are also pretty flimsy and don't pick up my hair or pull it into the barrel very well. I have fine hair but lots of it. This would be better for very fine and thin hair... except for the fact that it pulls hair out. Where the barrel attaches to the handle is a groove that the hair slips into and gets stuck. I might try filling the gap in with some kind of glue. Just have to figure out what kind (don't want anything grippy).

This was also packaged in a box that was not tall enough for the bristles they were smashed and I almost sent it back. Very poor presentation. I decided to give it a try anywho. Luckily the heat of the hair dryer and brushing through it made them straighten back out.

I just love this flat iron! I have REALLY long hair and I opted for this one rather than the three-inch-wide iron. The three-inch-wide iron is really too big and hard to use. I have straight hair naturally, but it has a slight wave to it. This iron is great for that shiny, stick-straight look.

It is really light, easy to use and great for travel! Hot Tools is always a great brand. It's the only brand I use now. I prefer the ceramic tourmaline tools, but they do not have one in the flat iron arena. This regular ceramic is still good though. I can definitely tell the next day that my hair feels less dry then it normally does when I use a non-ceramic iron.

If you can choose the seller, pick DiscountJungle. Their prices are almost always cheaper...but beware, shipping is about $10. However, the item always arrives quickly. I've used DiscountJungle twice now. Both times the items arrived two days after I placed the order.

The first flat-iron (purchased at a local beauty supply store) wouldn't heat up AT ALL three weeks after purchase, I returned it for a new one. The second flat-iron lasted six months when the protective enamel started chipping exposing the bare hot plate. It fried the ends of my hair. I will only use HAI flat-irons from now on, they are worth the money.

I've used this hairdryer for several years and when my first one died I was happy to see Amazon carried it because I could not find it in the local store. I like the heat settings, it's light weight, and the amount of air it produces is just right. It doesn't show it in the picture, but when I received it it also included a round diffuser in addition to the pictured attachment. The diffuser works great to keep my wavy hair from getting frizzy.

Very please with the performance of this hair dryer. This was purchased to replace basically the same model that finally gave out after 7 years of daily use by 3 family members.

It offers what I would call a warm heat as opposed to a hot heat that could singe your hair.

Overall all, an excellent product, very well made and lasts for years.

I've owned this dryer for only a few weeks, so I cannot speak to its longevity. This is my third hair dryer with a cord reel, which I find convenient. The first one was OK and worked well, but was noisy. My second one (Conair 1875 Watt Ionic Cord Keeper Hair Dryer), which I used for only a couple months, was also noisy. The cord in it was also too short (4 feet) and when retracting it, rewound so quickly that the plug would whip around and hit me painfully in the hand. I had to be careful about how to hold it when retracting the cord. It also had only fast/hot and slow/warm settings. I got fed up with it, so I looked for new options at a local Target.

I found this dryer and was hesitant to pay twice as much for it as I did the previous ones. I couldn't imagine what could be special enough about it to justify two and a half times the cost.

When I tried it, I was quite surprised. The first thing I noticed is that it is heavier and feels very solid and well built. I don't care about the weight--it takes me only a minute or two to dry my medium-length (for a man) hair. The next surprise was that it is extremely quiet--even at high speed. I no longer have to turn up my radio to hear the news while drying my hair. It has independent controls for heat and speed. I usually like to use high heat with the low speed so it doesn't blow my hair so much. The 5-foot cord retracts slowly and safely and is just the perfect length for my situation.

I would not describe the quietness of the dryer as slightly better than the cheaper driers I have used before--it is a dramatic difference. I have often wondered about the potential hearing loss my old dryers might cause, but didn't worry too much because it didn't take very long to dry my hair. If I still had long hair, I would be seriously concerned about the noise from a cheap dryer.

As for how well my hair looks after using it, I notice no difference from the other dryers. My hair if very fine and thick with some wave, so it is pretty easy to care for. It will frizz in high humidity, but I live in Denver and humidity is not a problem here. I have not tried this in a humid environment.

I highly recommend this dryer.

Update on 2010-10-17: This dryer is still working great and I still consider it the best dryer I've ever used.

Update on 2011-12-29: I cut my hair shorter last April and no longer use the hair dryer. It was still working perfectly after three years.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program So this is a Tourmaline Ionic Ceramic Dryer. What's in it for Me?

(For model specific info, skip down to the *******)

Ionic. Ceramic. Tourmaline. If you've shopped for a hair dryer or flipped through a beauty magazine in the past few years you've likely seen these buzz words. Yet what do they mean to you, the consumer?

"Ceramic" The coil (the component of the hairdryer that heats the air to dry the hair) is made of ceramic which heats more evenly than a metal coil purported to cause less damage to hair.

"Ionic" Very simply, "ions" are atoms or molecules with a positive or negative charge because the atom has gained or lost an electron. Great! but what does that have to do with hairdryers? According to hair dryer manufacturers, "instead of taking the air from the room and heating it, an ionic hair dryer uses negative ions to shrink the water droplets in hair . . . [helping] dry hair faster and with less damage, making it smooth and shiny." However, an environmental engineer can tell you there is no strong science to back up this claim. If you're unsure then just realize that all hairdryers still have coils which heat the air to dry the hair. (see above)

"Tourmaline" a type of gemstone touted by hair dryer manufacturers to produce more ions and therefore dry hair even faster with less damage. (see above) This claim also unproven by hard science.

Yet despite the lack of science to back the claim that Ceramic and or Tourmaline Ionic hair dryers "help smooth the cuticle layer creating silky, shiny hair [with] less frizz and more manageability" users continue to report the hairdryers do just that. Even consumer tests report this technology dries hair up to 70% faster.

Is there a placebo effect?

At this point in the game it no longer matters. Because the overwhelming majority of the dryers on the market today are either ionic, ceramic, or both and you can now purchase models with these features without any additional cost over models without these features it is no longer necessary to agonize whether or not it's "worth it" to plunk down $300 just to see for yourself. What you should do instead is evaluate the hair dryers other features.

*****************************************

And on those "other" features I can heartily recommend this hairdryer.

(in order from most important feature to least)

*The three heat settings and two speed settings are separate buttons, plus one of those "cool shot" buttons that were all the buzz a few years back. This is a very important and often missing feature for hairdryers, especially for dryers in the lower price range. If you don't have the speed and heat settings on separate buttons then you only have two options "high speed with hot heat" or "low speed with low heat." Despite the new technology, it's always been recommended not to simultaneously use the highest heat stetting at the same time you use the highest speed setting because the potential to damage the hair shaft is higher. That leaves you with "low speed with low heat" which takes *forever* to dry your hair. With the speed and heat settings on separate buttons you have the option to dry your hair on high speed but with lower heat or high heat but lower speed which are the best options to dry your hair quickly and safely. The third button, the "cool shot," is used at the end of drying to cool the hair quickly to help it "set."

*Retractable chord anything that helps keep your home less cluttered is a bonus. Wrapping the cord around the body of the dryer is damaging so the retractable chord feature is a wonderful bonus.

*You also get concentrator and a diffuser attachments which come on many but not all dryers.

-The diffuser is for curly or other styles that can get blown out with the direct application of a jet of air. Also great for heat setting rollers that would get frizzy with direct air.

-The concentrator (that small attachment you normally throw away) serves the opposite purpose and is excellent for straightening and styling hair or training bangs.

*Removable filter a common feature that helps to keep lint and hair out of the moving parts. Can be removed for periodic rinsing to maintain dryer performance.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I regularly have to dry my daughters hair (she's 10). Being a ham-fisted male, I have a hard time working with some of the arcane tools I've been provided (a hair iron?). I just finished using this dryer on her hair and it works great, even for me.

The device is designed very well. The retractable cord makes the dryer easy to store and retrieve. The settings are very simple to use and with only a few available, I'm not spending all kinds of time figuring out which ones to take advantage of. The high heat setting was not at all uncomfortable for me or my daughter, but with the trigger to switch on cool air, if my hands or her head got hot, we had quick relief if needed. It dried her hair very fast, but I could tell that it wasn't damaging the hair as it did it. The attachment that dries and untangles proved to big for my daughters shorter hair, but she may grow into it. I used the the funnel attachment quite a lot because it made controlling the flow & direction of the air much easier. I found the noise level to be really low compared with hair dryers I've used in the past.

We were both very happy with the experience. Best of all for my daughter, the dryer is pink, which won her over pretty quickly. It really seems like a sophisticated hair dryer and I anticipate quite a lot of use.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Infiniti by Conair 223F Cord Reel Dryer

Noise data included good job overall

Here are some points not discussed elsewhere. The Infinity is a medium weight hairdryer heft wise. The plastic construction is tight so it feels solid in your hands. It does a good enough a job drying hair (not significantly faster or slower than any other 1875 watt dryer). I like the removable filter which is mounted fairly flush with the back of the housing. I had others where the filter screen was the back of the housing, if you laid it down the wrong way the screen mounting tabs broke off too easily. Here is a tip for cleaning the plastic windowscreen like filter underneath; I used to clean it with tweezers to pull off the accumulated lint about once a month. I now use a Q-tip, simply touch the tip against the lint, twirl, and the lint gets tangled in the Q-tip and comes right off.

In use the dryer is pretty well balanced, and what surprised me, fairly quiet as well. It is not advertised as a particularly quiet model, which is important to me, but it is. I found that dryers with large diameter air inlets and outlets are usually quieter. Larger fan diameter equals slower and less noisy fan. This one was noticeably quieter than some other ones I have used, and the noise is slightly lower pitch and not as shrill. I decided to do a noise comparison of all the dryers we had in the house and sure enough, per minute of drying time, the Infinity was the second quietest. What was more surprising is how noisy these things are, not just objectively but subjectively as well. 86 dBA is LOUD. I tested all of them with a noise level meter held 12" away at a right angle to the discharge of air. Here are the results:

Revlon Quiet Ceramic 1875 High=80 dBA Low=71 dBA

Conair Infinity 1875 High=83 dBA Low=79 dBA

Remington All That 1875 High=86 dBA Low=76 dBA (very shrill)

Windmere MTD1CP ~1200 High=82 dBA Low=71 dBA (travel dryer, v. slow)

So, other than my specifically quiet Revlon, and the flea size Windmere, the Infinity was very quiet. A good value, and a pleasure to use. PS. I do not recommend that you use the self retracting cord feature without holding the cord with the other hand. It does snap back, and it just feels like a gimmick feature that will break if you use it too often.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Comes with 2 attachments for air distribution control Diffuser and Concentrator

Spec: 1875 watts

110-125 volts AC at 60hz

Pros:

-Ionic technology produces negative ions to neutralize the generally positive charges on the hair which helps to eliminate static

-As an electrical engineer, one of the first things I noticed is the presence of great safety device at the end of the cord. The ALCI or Appliance Leakage Circuit Interrupter, much like a GFCI or ground fault current interrupter. If the device sense a short circuit which is similar to what happens when the dryer falls in the tub, the electrical current will automatically get disconnected which can be a lifesaving factor. GFCI is now mandatory for all new bathroom constructions, but if you travel or happens to be in an old house that is not equipped with a GFCI, then it is good to know that it is a built-in device in your dryer.

-Retractable cord

-Some dryers only have a 4 ft cord. The additional foot is a big advantage.

-3 heat settings

-2 speed settings

Cons:

-A bit bulky & heavy

I have used this product for years and can't stand to be without it. In seconds you can go from thin, scraggly hair to looking like you have plenty of hair. I just wish there was a store I could buy it from in my area. It is very hard to find in stores and I can't undertstand that because it works so well. I just think people don't know about it or don't believe it works as well as it does. Also, it will absolutely not run when it gets wet, like if you get caught in the rain. Shampooing is the only way it will come out.

Decent product when applied looks like I have a full head of hair and I mean full! I ask people that I haven't seen in a few years "How bald am I?" and the response I have gotten has always been the same, "Looks like you might be receding a little bit" HA! Try almost fully bald! The only downside to this product is it has a tendancy to not hold up well under persperation, rain or plain old touching your hair. I prefer Ronco's GLH since it does not come out and is a more quality product. However, if you don't sweat or touch your hair then no one will be the wiser! By the by, this does not look like a hair peice it looks like real hair! Order one can and you will see the magic, then I'm sure you will order more. I know I have! As far as anyone besides my immeadiate family nobody even knows that I'm virtually bald! I'd say try it out, and if you tend to sweat spray a light coat of hair spray over it after it drys, it will help the product from running!

This spray helps to hide the thinning of hair. I was desperate to find something that would help and I am thankful that this product does.

Honest reviews on Jerome Russell Medium Brown Hair Color Thickener 3.5 oz JR873

The product works to cover bald spots. It is quick to apply compared to my prior regiment of applying brown powder (which was very messy). I have noticed my pillow is covered with brown spots in the morning and to apply the spray it is rather stinky but the smell does fade in time i always open my bathroom windows to ventilate. But all in all for convenience and the confidence i have gained from using it--it is well worth a try. I did buy 2 colors to find the perfect match for my medium brown hair. Medium brown spray was a better match for me. The product allows me to go 3 -5 days between washes and actually helps my hair to not look greasy. I will be using this since the price is cheap and it works. I'll take the good with the bad to attempt to cover my head.

This product is pretty good! I'm very satisfied with how well it covers my thin and bald spots. I wish I would've known about this stuff years ago, I've struggled with Trichotillomania (hair pulling disorder) and always had issues covering the unsightly spots. It also makes my hair thicker and fuller!

The downside is that it comes off on your fingers and rubs the color on your pillow case (it doesn't stain, just wash it) if you don't wash it out before you sleep. It doesn't completely rub the color out of your hair, its still stays, but I don't recommend using it if you have really bad dandruff or if you wear light colored shirts very often (its easier to see if you get it on your shirt while applying or if you put your shirt on after applying). It also makes your hair feel a bit stiff and dry.

However, even with the color rubbing off and the dryness, I still think this is a great, inexpensive product!

I travel a lot for work and my normal hair dryer just takes up too much space in my carry-on luggage (since I never check a bag) and of course, I don't trust crappy hotel hair dryers. This hair dryer folds up small and was surprisingly good at drying my hair. It dried it as quickly and well (including styling with the nozzle) as my normal hair dryer does. Reviews of other dryers said that they only worked on high when using 220V, but this has both low and high on both voltages. The diffuser does a decent job of diffusing the air and dried my hair well without firzzing it. I only plan to use it for travel and only used it for 2 weeks overseas, so I can't vouch for its durability. At this time, though, I am very satisfied with it.

I bought these as a gift for my wife so I am publishing her review..."I received these rollers as a gift. They get HOT and do what they are supposed to. However...they are very hard to hold on to as they are so hot and small cool area to grab. The clips are okay, but don't find that they hold the rollers well. This may be because my hair is very long and also heavy. I think these rollers are a great set for the price, but would be best suited for someone with shorter or medium length hair."

This is a huge disappointment! It takes forever for the rollers to heat which is not a big deal once I realized how long it would take and allowed for the slow speed. Worse, however, the rollers will not stay in with the supplied holders even with my long hair. They will not hold a curl and after about two minutes will be falling off. Also I would have liked the rollers to be hotter because I could deal with re-winding...as it is, by the time I've rewound two or three times the roller are too cool to do much good. Save your money and buy a good curling iron...at least it will be hot and will hold on to your hair.

I love how fast these rollers heat up and I love the size of them. The only thing I am not crazy about is the clips that they sent to hold them to your head. I have fine, thin hair, so unfortunately each clip leaves a little dent in my hair. Lucky, I am usually able to tease out the dent. But other than that, love them!

So, watch your fingers, but I like the fact that they are all all extra large. Heats up fast. Clips don't hold well, had to use another set of clips I bought at a big box store that hold tighter.

The clips to hold the rollers in place just don't do the job. The rollers aren't tight to the head and just "flop". Also, rollers don't seem to get very hot. Cost too much to return.

I recently purchased the Helen of Troy Chrome 1875 Watt Professional Hair Dryer #6037, as I had gone through a number of other brand hair dryers of recent and never owned a Helen of Troy product. I had heard something to the effect through the years that these hair dryers hold up real well and can truly be considered to be a professional's choice. So with this in mind, I went ahead with my purchase. I received the hair dryer very quickly and from the several times I have used it already, I am very impressed. It is a good looking dryer and it seems to fit the hand very comfortably with its special grip handle. There is lot of blowing power behind this dryer and it does a fine job completely blowing my hard to dry hair in a timely yet gentle manner. I am so far so impressed with this hair dryer that I am also seriously considering purchasing a Helen of Troy travel style model. There is also a cold shot button which really aids to setting any curl or waves you may want to place in your hair. I would highly recommend this product to anyone looking for an excellent quality hair dryer at a somewhat reasonable price!

I am not a weakling, but my arms get really tired when I'm using this dryer. It also runs a bit hot, which is bad for your hair. I'll be giving this to Goodwill and getting a better one.

I needed a good hairdryer with a long electrical cord, and this dryer did the trick. It does its job well. When compared to salon-quality dryers it doesn't dry quite as fast, thus the 4-star rating instead of 5. When compared to consumer-grade dryers, it is a great dryer!

Honest reviews on Helen of Troy 6037 Turbo Styling Dryer, Chrome

First let me say, they don't make 'em like they used to, but this is a pretty good one. I had an 80's era, monster Con-air blow dryer that I received for my birthday...30+ years ago. I loved that thing! It finally died right at the 30 year mark and my replacement nightmare began. So I bought a Vidal Sassoon that lasted me almost 3 years before quitting. No love lost though. It was mediocre and way under powered. This time I tried a little Con-air portable that sounded like it was breaking every time you folded/un-folded the handle. You could hardly tell it was blowing when it was on high and there was almost no heat. I am a lady with a super-short boy cut. After 5 minutes, my hair was still wet. That one went back.

After reading reviews on several blow dryers here on Amazon, it seems the under-powered problem abounds everywhere nowadays. So I was pleased to read several reviews that stated the Helen of Troy dryers did the job quickly and efficiently. I paid a little more than half price for an open-box item and it is a great little blow dryer. As a couple of others noted, the concentrator attachment doesn't fit snuggly and doesn't stay on very well, which is most likely why the one I purchased was returned. It's still not 80's, big-hair wonderful, but it's still pretty good.

I have had many brands of hair dryers over the years but this is truly the most quiet and the best drying one I've purchased. You can't go wrong with this one. A little more money but worth it!
